With the most popular city-building sim on Facebook, Social City, already under its belt, Playdom has expanded the genre with their new game, Treetopia. Essentially a mash-up of two different types of social gameplay, Treetopia brings something slightly different to the scene.

What Is It?
Treetopia is a combination city-building and questing game that puts the player in charge of a village of elf-like people in a mystical land called Treetopia. The basic goal is to grow your population and keep them happy. This is done by building homes and other types of buildings to produce resources. In order to level-up, players can also complete quests if they have the appropriate number of villagers and resources.

How to Play
When you start the game, you're given a small village with a few villagers, homes, a chieftain hut, and a fire pit. The game walks you through building more homes in order to increase your population and constructing resource-generating buildings such as a Wood Works and Stone Quarry.

You must keep your villagers happy in order to produce the maximum amount of resources. This done by keeping the village "weed-free" by clicking on ugly, thorny plants as they sprout up.

Your population is limited by your player level, and while constructing buildings gives you some experience, completing quests is the easiest way to level up. The quests are designed to tell players a little bit more about the world of Treetopia and include everything from going to other villages to scouting for certain items or plants. All quests cost a certain amount of resources and require a certain number of happy villagers. Once you accept the quest, the game gives you a step-by-step description of what happens and whether or not you were successful.

There are a number of disasters your villagers can encounter on the quests, including floods, rockslides, and poisonous plants. You can build special structures in your village to produce warriors and mages among others that can help to combat these disasters. In addition, if your neighbors have the appropriate type of villagers, they can come to your aid on a quest. Playdom says neighbors will become very important in completing the higher level quests.

We're likely to see more features added to the game as time goes on, but the questing system that allows for light "exploration" of the world is an intriguing addition to the city-building genre.
