Alpha Protocol FAQ Details PC DRM
Sega's put together a lengthy FAQ detailing the Uniloc SoftAnchor DRM that will protect the PC version of Alpha Protocol from pesky pirates. One crucial aspect to highlight is Sega's promise to release a DRM-free game .exe eighteen to twenty-four months after the ARPG's initial launch, so if you really do despise DRM, just hold out for a couple of years:

I know this info was discussed recently and there were many concerns, which is expected for DRM. I’ve talked with our teams and given some of the other solutions out there, this seems pretty straight forward and very accommodating. The only major requirement is an internet connection, and there are workarounds if you don’t have a PC connected to the internet. Here’s the official statement on what to expect:

The system chosen for Alpha Protocol is Uniloc: SoftAnchor. The system will allow the user to activate Alpha Protocol online immediately out of the box and once activated the user never needs to worry about activating again. The activation can be used on a limited amount of PCs, and can be deactivated through our online servers allowing the user full control over their license – should they need to re-install, swap machines or suffer a catastrophic hardware failure on their normal PC.

In the future, SEGA will be releasing an unprotected patch of the game to alleviate any fears of not being able to play the game when the Uniloc servers won’t be around anymore.

We also do not use Steamworks – the Steam released version will use Uniloc DRM.

The PC version of Alpha Protocol uses an internet based licensing system. After installation, the user is required to enter a valid product registration code (license key) in order to begin playing the game. An internet connection is necessary to do this.

Your registration code, like the software and license that you purchased is your property. Please keep it in safe place and don’t give it out to others. We have endeavored to deploy a licensing system that is fair and does not inconvenience users. You can have the software installed on an unlimited number of computers and can actively use up to five installations at any one time. The software informs you if the installation you wish to use is not active and will guide you through the process of transferring licenses from those that are active with just a few mouse clicks.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops Debut HD Trailer Released
- 38 Comments
As you can see, the fifty-three second debut Call Of Duty: Black Ops trailer is comprised of pre-rendered scenes and a number of fast cuts showing small snippets of action from the seventh instalment in the venerable franchise. As it is nigh on impossible to ascertain any detail from such cuts, I've frame-grabbed the entire trailer, allowing you to peruse the video's imagery at your leisure.

Flash HD (78MB) / Flash SD (18MB)

As mentioned yesterday, Call Of Duty: Black Ops visits Vietnam, The Arctic, and Cuba. One of these scenarios must take place during or after 1977, as our frame grabs clearly show a soldier using a Steyr AUG, an Austrian assault rifle released after the conclusion of the Vietnam War. A digital display is also seen displaying 2010 as the year.

Fallout: New Vegas Video Interview

Once upon a time, Josh Eric Sawyer was Lead Designer on Black Isle Studios' Van Buren Fallout 3, but left the project before its cancellation and the eventual closure of the studio. Now, seven years later, Sawyer is the Project Director and Lead Designer of Obsidian Entertainment's Fallout: New Vegas, which is based on the gameplay and technology designed by Bethesda for their own interpretation of the third Fallout:

Defense Of The Ancients Developer: Collaboration With Valve To Be Announced Soon
- 2 Comments
Defense Of The Ancients developer IceFrog reveals that his project with Valve will be announced "soon," having been in the works since last October:

When will we hear more about you and Valve? Some people say it will take 2-3 years, can you give us any clues?

It certainly won't take that long. There are a lot of very talented people here at Valve that are working hard on it every day to ensure high quality in a timely manner. We'll be making an announcement soon actually, and based on the feedback I've been getting since the last mention, I'm sure you all will be as excited as I am.

Can you tell us how you first met Valve and how you like it so far?

It started off with an email from Valve where they mentioned that they were big fans of DotA wanted to fly me out to spend some time with them and visit their studio. I wasn't quite sure what to expect from the trip. After arriving and chatting with them, the first thing I noticed was how much of their decision making process was like mine. They shared the same aspirations towards building a long term and sustainable community without having short sighted business goals that end up hurting the quality of the game. One of the most important things for me though was that there wasn't going to be anyone standing above telling me how I should be doing things. They trust the developers that have experience to make the best decisions for their playerbase. The atmosphere at Valve allows everyone to be very comfortable and able to focus on what they love doing. It also doesn't hurt that they are huge DotA fans.. until their favorite heroes are nerfed, then I'm the bad guy for a week!

In addition to his work with Valve, IceFrog continues to direct development of new patches and content for DotA. Upcoming changes to the game are discussed in his community Q&A;, along with the size of the player base, which he now estimates to be between 7 and 11 million. This figure excludes the gigantic Chinese scene that he cannot track.

Headup Games Announces Trapped Dead, A Zombie Action RTS
- 1 Comment
Decade-old German developer, Crenetic, takes their first stab at a 'proper' game, having previously made mobile phone, set top box and Flash-based titles:

They just will not stay dead ...

Headup Games officially announces today the publication of Trapped Dead. Already announced by a teaser site, Headup Games today reveals official info about the game.

Trapped Dead is set in the early 80's and is set in a small town called Hedge Hill near Kansas City, Missouri. Here, however, nothing is as it seems. The seeds of a new, genetically modified maize means that a virus mutates into the food chain. An infected dog bites a person, leading to complete infection of Hedge Hill in no time at all. Mike and Gerald, two students on a picnic, stop to fill up at a gas station unbeknownst of recent events - unfortunately for them, the virus has already reached the fuel station and infected its staff...

Trapped Dead is a tactical real time strategy game for adults. Players conduct up to four characters through a zombie survival scenario inspired by the successful horror films of the early 80's. A co-op mode for up to four players will also be included.

Trapped Dead is being developed by Crenetic Studios under the direction of Carsten Widera-Trombach. A veteran of the games industry with over ten years of experience, he will work with, amongst others, Lead Programmer Markus Kark. Responsible in the past for the 3D animations in "Gothic" and "Gothic II," and for developing the Gothic 3D engine, Markus has also programmed for "The Settlers: Rise of Cultures" and was responsible for the artwork.

Trapped Dead will be released by the end of November 2010, exclusively for the PC.

Fallen Earth Restructuring Follow-Up
Amidst allegations of complete closure following yesterday's restructuring statement, Fallen Earth's developer reveals that the MMO studio still retains twenty-eight core staff in addition to support specialists and GMs. Unconfirmed scuttlebutt suggests that this represents a reduction of headcount by as much as 80%.

Thanks for your questions and for your interest in what's going on with Icarus Studios. Some of you who know staff understand that this was a difficult step for us. As of today, there are 28 core staff members plus customer support staff and GMs. We believe in our product--we know we have a great game, and we have an amazing community. None of this will change. We are on time for Blood Sports Patch 1.4 next Friday, and we are on schedule for subsequent content updates.

The decisions made today regarding staff are for the general health of the company and the game as a whole, and we don't anticipate any changes on the player side of things. Servers are up, customer support and GM guidance are still in place, and our production schedule is still on target. We appreciate your support and dedication to us personally, to our team, and to Fallen Earth.

In no way are we minimizing the gravity of the decisions that were made today. Our goal is not to "spin" something to give you the confidence to sub up. We've always been as honest as possible with the community, and we will continue to do so. While the decisions made by the company were difficult ones, our perspective hasn't changed. We have a kick ass game. We have an awesome community. We have a solid team and we are committed to the upcoming patch and future content development.

StarCraft II Developer Chat Chatlog
The answers from yesterday's StarCraft II Twitter dev chat are in! Balance, single-player mission variety, map making, map distribution, and a whole load of other topics are discussed. Here's a taste:

Last Dev Chat, Terran was behind in all 1v1 and 2v2 matchups. How do the racial matchup numbers look now? Any outlier matchups?

We have several tools to measure race balance. The simplest is the win loss by race, factored by leagues. In Platinum and Gold leagues the numbers look like this.

Terrans vs. Protoss 46% - 54%
Protoss vs. Zerg 51% - 49%
Terrans vs. Zerg 51% - 49%

I do not have the more interesting numbers that factor for player skill. The last time I saw these numbers Zerg were ahead of Protoss, Protoss were ahead of Terrans and Terrans and Zerg were fairly even.

Obviously there is a lot more work to be done and more beta time in front of us but we are very pleased with the current numbers.

A free unlimited time* demo is on offer next Friday, along with a 'Return To Star Trek Online' offer. Players still subscribed can earn freebies by playing for a hundred days, in addition to other stuff acquired by referring a friend to the MMO:

Atari, one of the world’s most recognized videogame publishers, and acclaimed developer Cryptic Studios, are pleased to announce a range of new reward programs for Star Trek Online, the massively multiplayer online game for the PC. These programs include: the Star Trek Online Veterans Rewards, Star Trek Online Referral program, Star Trek Online Winback Weekend and Star Trek Online Demo. The new offers begin May 7, 2010.

When a referred friend subscribes to Star Trek Online, the referrer will receive an additional title of Recruiter, a unique holographic bridge officer and 400 Cryptic points! The more new people a player successfully refers, the more rewards that player will earn.

The Star Trek Online Winback Weekend gives former players a chance to revisit the Star Trek Online universe and enjoy exciting new content. Users with a valid Star Trek Online retail account, but no current subscription, can log-in with their existing characters and play free for the entire weekend. This initiative will kick off on May 7, 2010, at 10 a.m. PST and last until May 10, 2010, at 10 a.m. PST. Pre-load begins on May 3, 2010.

The demo client is available for pre-load on May 3, 2010, and will go live starting on May 7, 2010.

“Star Trek Online gives fans and gamers an unprecedented Star Trek experience and we are confident that the new awards and referral programs will positively expand upon this unique experience,” said Jeff Lapin, CEO of Atari, SA. “We are very pleased with the post-launch content additions and want to give new players a chance to experience the latest expansions and missions, while rewarding those players who helped us launch so successfully.”

Planetside Clock Counting Down To Planetside Next Announcement?
Planetside Universe directs us to the official Planetside website where a clock is counting down to 11pm PST on Tuesday, May 18th.

The likely reveal at the end of the rainbow countdown is either Planetside Next, the next-gen sequel, or the promised upgrade for the existing Planetside. As someone with experience in such matters I'd place money on Planetside Next - it won't be a big huge reveal (that will instead be reserved for E3 in June), but rather a teaser trailer.

Heroes Of Newerth Going Retail FAQ Announces May 12th Launch
- 5 Comments
S2Games announces that the launch of their authorised Defense Of The Ancients clone will occur May 12th, at 4pm EST. Heroes Of Newerth costs $30 via a digital distribution transaction, sent directly to the developers.

I wanted to send out an email to let everyone know that HoN is going retail on Wednesday, May 12 @ 4:00pm EST (-5 GMT). Starting Wednesday, May 5 @ 4:00pm EST (-5 GMT) we will allow accounts that purchase (or have already pre-purchased) to claim nicknames of accounts that are not pre-purchased. If there is a nickname you want or if you would like to secure your own nickname, please take the time to purchase your account now instead of later.

Going to retail is exciting news for the game but raises many questions. I tried to cover many of those questions in this FAQ.

1.) What happens when HoN goes retail?

When HoN goes retail it will require a paid account to play. If you have not purchased your account you may do so here

2.) Will HoN be free? How much will it cost? Are there any recurring fees?

HoN will not be free, it will cost a ONE TIME $30.00 USD payment with ZERO recurring fees.

3.) What will happen with stats, replays, PSR, and SMR after retail?

All stats will be reset upon release. Also all historical data of previous matches, including replays, will be purged. SMR and PSR (the ratings used for match making and public games) will be compressed, bringing all accounts closer to 1500 as we feel this will positively impact gameplay and team balances post release.

4.) Will HoN still be updated and new content added after retail?

We plan to consistently update HoN with lots of new heroes, items, features, and other goodies throughout the product life cycle for free.

5.) If I Pre-Purchased can my name be taken? How do I stop my name from being taken?

If you pre-purchased your account your nickname can not be taken and that is the only way to secure it.

6.) If I Pre-Purchase before May 5th, can I take a non Pre-Purchased accounts name?

Absolutely, and on top of that we will make sure that all pre-purchased accounts have one nickname change credit to use for May 5.

7.) Are Golden Shields, Golden Names, and Taunt available anymore? Will they ever be available again?

Unfortunately those pre-purchase incentives ended with closed beta a month ago. We will not sell Golden Shields or Golden Names again but accounts will be able to acquire Taunt and other cool account features post release.

8.) I'm from South East Asia and I can't Pre-Purchase, why? How will I play after retail?

We will be making our formal announcement for our partner and strategy for SEA early next week. If you play from SEA your nickname will be able to taken but that will not impact you moving forward past retail.

I want to thank everyone who helped us beta test the game. I could not be more proud of the product we have created and I look forward to seeing most of you post retail!

An open beta is currently ongoing - head here to participate.

Our internal poll tells us we should make more teasers.

    This Week's Poll

While last week's poll was interesting, this week's in-game poll actually changes the game. The question? Should we make Realism Versus a permanent game mode? This is by far the most important vote you will cast this year. For 360 owners, you must own "The Passing" to vote in this poll.

Toy Story 3: The Video Game Trailer Introduces Playable Emperor Zurg
    - 1 Comment
The Playstation 3 version of Toy Story 3: The Video Game will feature an exclusive, playable, Emperor Zurg, in addition to Playstation Move motion controller support:

Disney Interactive Studios today announced that Toy Story 3: The Video Game for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system, releasing on June 15, 2010, will exclusively feature content and gameplay available only on the PlayStation 3 system (PS3). Emperor Zurg, one of the most beloved villains of the Disney•Pixar "Toy Story" franchise, will be a playable character exclusively on the PS3 system. In addition, Toy Story 3: The Video Game will be one of the first games to market featuring the PlayStation Move's motion controller compatible gameplay.

As the sworn enemy of the Galactic Alliance, Emperor Zurg enters the video game's Toy Box mode complete with his sphere-shooting cannon and speed on wheels to unleash mayhem on Woody's Western Town.

"What we love about the evil Emperor is that he may be only six-inches tall, but he never comes to grips with his ‘toyhood' - Zurg is forever out to conquer the universe," said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager of Avalanche Software, the developer of the game. "We worked closely with Pixar to ensure the game's animated toys behave true to their physical counterparts. Zurg is mischievous and fast, and with his arm cannon, he's great at blasting things-he'll earn you a lot of gold. But don't ask him to climb any ledges - we've respected the fact that he's got wheels, not legs."

The game's developer, Avalanche Software in Salt Lake City, UT and Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) have also worked together to build PlayStation Move compatible gameplay into the game. Following the game's launch, PS3 players will be able to download mini-games that will be playable with the PlayStation Move when the new motion controller is available to consumers this fall.

"Disney is bringing PlayStation fans a unique and compelling experience through Toy Story 3: The Video Game's exclusive PS3 content and PlayStation Move mini-games. PS3 is the only platform where players can become the beloved Zurg and hop in his specialized car, or take aim in the shooting gallery with PlayStation Move and experience an unmatched level of precision and realism," said Rob Dyer, senior vice president of publisher relations, SCEA.

    Fallen Earth Developer Restructures
Despite enjoying significant subscription growth, Fallen Earth's developer has had to restructure to ensure the continued operation of the post-apocalyptic MMOARPG:

In an announcement made today, Chief Executive Officer of Icarus Studios, Inc., James Hettinger, announced a restructure of the company resources and staffing, effective immediately. The changes come on the heels of the six-month anniversary of Fallen Earth, a massively multiplayer online (MMO) game co-developed with FALLEN EARTH, LLC.

“While this is a challenging step for us,” said Hettinger, “the steps were taken to maintain the growth, continued development and profitability of Fallen Earth.”

As a result of today’s reorganization and in an effort to maintain development, the combined companies will support core members of staff for ongoing customer service and continued development of Fallen Earth and company projects.

Team leads are continuing production and development on Fallen Earth Blood Sports Patch 1.4, scheduled for release on May 7. Community support and scheduled events, such as Slots Night, will continue as announced.

Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition's Halflings Unveiled
    - 1 Comment
Blood Bowl: Legendary Edition is hitting the webwaves at the end of 2010, and one of the several races that will be joining the game is the Halflings. Sounds like these little hairypads will have their work cut out for them against the other races!

Too small to develop a game based on passes, too slow to outrun opponents and too weak for all-out assaults, Halflings are truly a unique race in the Blood Bowl world. However, on rare occasions a Halfling team miraculously wins a game. When it happens, this has more to do with luck and culinary talent than technical skills, which are practically nonexistent among Halfling teams! They do however get to have Tree-Men on their teams which are obviously a great asset, making up for what the Halflings lack in skills. They can even throw their small teammates towards the end zone… assuming they don’t take root beforehand!

APB Launches June 29th, Subscriptions Cost $9.99 A Month
    - 14 Comments
The official APB FAQ has been updated, revealing the release date and pricing structure for Realtime Worlds' action MMO. Available June 29th, the retail box will set you back $49.99, and includes 50 hours of shooting time (access to the social areas where violence is not permitted is unlimited). Monthly access costs an additional $9.99 once that time expires. Alternatively, purchase the horribly overpriced 20-hour game cards for an extra $6.99:

APB: All Points Bulletin will be released for the PC on June 29th in North America, July 2nd in Europe. You can purchase a retail version of APB either in-store or via digital download at standard retail price (SRP $49.99/£34.99/€49.99). The game includes 50 hours of action game play out of the box plus unlimited time in APB's social districts customising, socialising and trading on the marketplace.

Once your game time is up, you have flexibility to top up your action game time from as little as $6.99 (£5.59, €6.29) for an additional 20 hours, while more frequent players can switch to a 30-day unlimited package for only $9.99 (£7.99, €8.99) with discounts available for 90 and 180 days.

The retail package also contains a bonus 100 RTW points towards your next purchases.

An additional benefit to this evolutionary model is the ability for you to convert your own customisations and rewards to tradable products to give to friends or clan-mates or to place on the Marketplace to earn more RTW points (convertible to game time) or in-game cash.
