Web Design Basics

Wouldn't an HTML Size Tag Be Useful?

While there is no such thing as an HTML size tag, CSS provides you with a number of ways to define the size of elements on your Web pages. And while not as compact as the hypothetical size tag, they give you more flexibility for sizing designs.

The Web Design Gallery is Back

Monday March 16, 2009
It took 2.5 months, but I've finally finished the changes I needed to make to the Web Design Gallery. If you've already submitted your site, don't worry, it's still in the queue. I just needed to work with some of the tools About.com provides to come up with a better way to do the gallery. I've posted 3 new sites for this week's gallery entry. And all three would like to hear your thoughts as well. So be sure to check out Better Interactive, ShoeString Genealogy, and Paws For Parrish, and let them know what you think of their designs.

Poll: Do You Put Prices on Your Web Design Business Website?

Thursday March 12, 2009

Prices are one of those touchy areas. Just deciding on a fair price can be really difficult. And then providing that information on your business site can be nerve wracking as you might lose customers simply because they see your prices and are scared off. I worked with one person who felt that putting the prices of her services on her website made her less flexible and less able to adjust her prices to handle circumstances. While one of her competitors in the same area had their prices prominently displayed for everyone to see.

When my friend's prices were low, this was a good situation for her. People could see her competitor's prices, then call her and find out that she was cheaper. But when her prices went up (and her competitor's didn't), the competitor started doing better simply because their customers didn't have to take an extra step to find out what they'd be charged. In fact, some potential customers felt that it was a situation of "if I have to ask, I can't afford it". In other words, proprietors of luxury items sometimes leave the prices off (such as in an expensive restaurant).

What do you think? Do you display your prices or leave them off? Why or why not?

Web Host Reviews - 19 New Reviews - Customer Service is Important

Wednesday March 11, 2009

One thing I noticed on a lot of the reviews this time was that the customer service provided (or not provided) often has a very strong impact on how the company is rated. While I had one reader tell me that I shouldn't feature GoDaddy because of their sexist ads, that is the exception. Most people care a lot more about how they are treated when they call in with a problem than the advertising or even the actual hosting services provided.
