The academic record of CEOs of the 500 leading worldwide companies

The 350 leading higher education institutions in 2008

1. Choice of ranking criteria

Measuring the quality of training provided by higher education institutions rests on a variety of criteria:

- the salary and the period of delay before recruitment of graduates would seem to be one of the most relevant data for assessing the short-term quality of training courses evaluated by employers; nevertheless, the corresponding data, when they are available (which is quite rare except for MBA graduates), are essentially declared; furthermore, variations in the cost of living, from one country to another, inevitably introduce a significant bias in the ranking;

- senior managerial positions occupied by alumni would also be an interesting factor for assessing the quality of alumni’s academic careers; however, the definition of a senior executive may vary from one company to another; what is more, comparing the executive director of an SME with a CEO of a major international group may raise a number of problems of coherence;

- the creation of companies by graduates could also be a relevant criterion to be taken into account but, once again, the data on an international level do not exist, and achievements (companies actually created) are difficult to compare.

We have therefore chosen to adopt a simple criterion, undeclared but verifiable: the number of alumni holding a post of chief executive officer or equivalent in one of the 500 leading international companies, at a particular time and with the data, (companies and company leaders) of the Fortune Global 500 classification established by Fortune magazine in 2007 on the basis of turnover published by international companies.

This criterion is meant to be the equivalent, as far as companies are concerned, of the criterion of “alumni having been awarded the Nobel Prize or the Fields Medal”, used in the classification established by Jiaotong University in Shanghai, the former students concerned being of a similar number. However, unlike the Shanghai classification, this criterion points to the performance of the training courses provided by higher education institutions rather than performance achieved in research by those institutions.

2. Ranking methodology

The academic career for qualification in higher education of CEOs has been redefined and, for each person in question, a point has been awarded to each of the various institutions which contributed to their higher education.

For example, the CEO of Wal-Mart Stores, H. Lee Scott, Jr., graduated from Pittsburg State University alone; 1 point is therefore awarded to Pittsburg State University.

Conversely, the CEO of General Motors, G. Richard Wagoner, Jr., graduated from both Duke University and Harvard University; ½ point is therefore awarded to Duke University and ½ point to Harvard University.

When it was not possible to identify all or part of a executive director’s training institutions, the corresponding points were not attributed.

Marcel Rohner, the executive director of UBS, obtained his Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree in unknown institutions before obtaining a Ph.D. at the University of Zurich; this means that only of a point is awarded to the University of Zurich, the remaining of a point are not attributed.

The points awarded to each institution for all of the 500 CEO are then added up, so as to classify the range of institutions having contributed to the graduate training of one or several CEOs of the 500 companies listed by Fortune Global 500.

Korea University obtains 1½ points thanks, firstly, to the CEO of Samsung, Lee Sang Dae (1 point) and, secondly, to the CEO of SK, Tae-Won Chey (½ point).

Lastly, to give greater clarity to the result, and similarly as regards the Shanghai classification, the factor 100 is attributed to the institution which has obtained the highest number of points, while that of other institutions is defined as a percentage of the best score.

This year, Tokyo University obtained the highest number of points with 16points; the factor of 100 was attributed to Tokyo University.

The University of Arizona obtained 2 points; it was attributed the factor of “2 divided by 16multiplied by 100”, namely 12 (expressed as a %). Similarly, the University of Alaska trained only Tom Albanese, the CEO of the Rio Tinto Group; it therefore has 1 point, namely a factor of 6.

Comment: The transformation of “points – factor” in no way changes the order of classification of institutions as one 1 point is equivalent to a factor of 6.

3. Analysis of results

For the 2008 classification, we have been able to obtain information on the higher education career of 458 of the 500 CEOs of companies listed in Fortune Global 500. For the 42 others (i.e. 8.4% of the total number), it was not possible to reconstitute any element of their academic career. The results of this academic career appraisal are listed in detail in paragraph 6.

While a very substantial effort to collect information was made this year with regard to Asia, it has not been possible to describe the academic career of several European and Asian company directors (cf. table 1); this has certainly been unfavourable to Asian and European higher education institutions.

Table 1: Geographical distribution of CEOs for whom the higher education career has not been identified.

This methodology has made it possible to grade 350 higher education institutions (as many institutions contributed to the training of several CEOs). A detailed list of these 350 institutions is to be found in paragraph 7 of this study.

It may be useful to examine the results (paragraph 7) on a group basis as, for a given institution, the training provided to a CEO, whether more or less supplementary, can have a very strong impact on its ranking. Table 2 therefore displays the distribution of institutions according to the “equivalent number” of trained CEOs.

The “equivalent number” of trained CEOs signifies the “number of points obtained”. This means that an institution which, for example, has contributed to half of the training of two CEOs will have trained the equivalent of one CEO (½ + ½ = 1).

Comment: The very notion of classification may become virtually meaningless beyond the 60th ranking as in that case the institutions have trained less than the equivalent of 2 CEOs.

4. Statistics per country

It is then possible, for each of these groups, to consider the distribution per country of the classified higher education institutions. That is the subject of the three following tables:

Table 5: Classification according to country of the number of institutions having trained the equivalent of 2 or more executive directors (Top 60)

Countries can therefore be classified according to the number of points or factor obtained by their higher education institutions (table 6 – columns 1 to 3)

In South Korea, the Seoul National University wins a factor of 23, Korea University wins a factor of 9 and Yonsei University 6; the aggregate of these factors thereby ranks Korea in 12th position of the countries with a total score of 38.

However, it is quite clear that the results of a country are very strongly correlated to the number of companies of that country represented in Fortune Global 500 insofar as, more often than not, the companies are managed by executives who have completed most of their higher education in their country of origin.

The USA, which has 162 companies among the 500 leaders, would seem to be distinctly privileged in this classification according to country.

It may therefore be worthwhile to compare the points actually obtained by a country with those, of a theoretical nature, which it should have obtained if the CEOs of all of “its” companies had been trained exclusively in “its” universities. This comparison should provide us with an indication of the attractiveness and relevance of the higher education courses offered by each country (does it only train the CEOs of the country’s companies? does it contribute to the training of the CEOs of companies in other countries? do the CEOs of its companies seek training in other countries?). In all fairness, this comparison has been undertaken only for companies accounted for (i.e. for those in which all or part of the CEO’s academic career has been identified). This is the subject of the latter part of table 6 (columns 4 to 6).

With the previous example, it was observed that South Korea had a factor score of 38. In point of fact, the academic careers of 10 out of the 14 CEOs of Korean companies classified among the leading 500 are known. If the 10 CEOs of these companies had all been trained in Korea, the country would have a total factor score – in this instance theoretical – of 60 (namely 10 x 6). The “real/theoretical” ratio of Korea is therefore 0.63 (namely 38/60), much lower than 1, which means that its CEOs obtained on average more than one third of their higher education qualifications in other countries.

Comment: Examination of this table can also show that, with the notable exception of Austria and Ireland (which have contributed to training many more CEOs than they have companies among the 500 leaders), the differences between countries are not as great; the ratio of the USA, in particular, which is only 1.12, relativizes the predominance of its training institutions.

5. FAQ

The numerous reactions to the 2007 edition of this ranking have led us to list below the main questions raised and to attempt to specify our point of view in each case.

- How do you justify recourse to a single criterion?

A single criterion for assessing the quality of higher education courses may appear very limiting. As indicated in paragraph 1, however, it is the only verifiable and reproducible characteristic that we have wanted for this classification. Everyone can in fact carry out this survey again with the same criterion and the result will not change.

- Does not the quality of a particular type of training depend on the number of future CEOs trained?

The quality of a particular training course naturally comprises many aspects. There are excellent institutions that have never trained CEOs in companies listed in Fortune Global 500. Similarly, there are excellent research institutions which have never worked with or trained Nobel laureates or winners of the Fields Medal.

In a world in which higher education is exposed to increasing international competition, such an indicator (very widely used by MBA programmes) may be meaningful.

- The CEOs completed their studies 30 years ago; is it therefore the institutions’ past which is evaluated?

Perfectly justified … as for the Nobel laureates referred to above. Our idea is to reproduce this classification every year and to analyse trends over time. We shall certainly continue to study the past but in a dynamic manner.

- If the Shanghai ranking has the drawback of placing emphasis on research, the ranking of Mines Paris has that of emphasizing the “business” dimension; neither of the two focuses on innovation and company creation, which surely are driving factors in a country’s economy?

This constitutes a very significant criticism (to our mind). As pointed out in the first paragraph, we cannot unfortunately see which criteria should be used for assessing these major factors.

6. The academic record of CEOs of the 500 leading worldwide companies

(based on Fortune Global 500, 2007)

In red: changes in relation to the 2007 survey

Each executive director obtained from 0 (no higher education) to 4 higher education diplomas. The actual title of the diplomas is not specified; the first diploma could be a Bachelor’s degree, the second a Master’s degree or a Ph.D., and the third an MBA.
