SYMPTOMS

As an administrator, you change the user name for a user in the Active Directory directory service. When you do this, the folder redirection process for that user fails on a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP.

However, the folder redirection process still works on any computers on which the user did not log on before the name change.

Note Folder redirection is implemented when a user logs on to the computer for the first time.

This issue occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The folder redirection path includes the user name. For example, you use a redirected folder path that resembles the following path:
    \\Server_Name\Share_Name\%User_Name%\
  • After the name change, the user first logs on to a computer that is running Windows Vista or Windows XP on which the user has never logged on before the name change.
Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Event ID: 107
User: Domain\New_user_name
Description: Failed to perform redirection of folder My Documents. The folder is configured to be redirected from \\Server_Name\Share_Name\User_Name\My_Documents to \\Server_Name\Share_Name\New_User_Name\My_Documents. The following error occurred: Cannot create a file when that file already exists.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because a new folder is created when the user logs on for the first time by using the new user name on any computer on which the user has not logged on before.

Therefore, when the user logs on to a computer on which he or she previously logged on before the name change, the existing folder for the user profile cannot be renamed to the new user name. This condition causes the folder redirection process to fail.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, you must delete the affected user's profile on the computers on which the user logged on before the name change. To do this, use one of the following methods.

Important The user profile contains user-specific settings, data, and digital certificates. We recommend that you make a backup copy of the user profile before you delete it. For more information about how to export user certificates, visit the following Microsoft TechNet Web site:
