HOME THEATER

HDMI CEC (Consumer Electronic Control)

HDMI cable
The High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI) has dramatically simplified the way we connect our home-theater gear; a maturing feature of HDMI called Consumer Electronic Control (CEC) promises to further simplify the user experience by adding a bit of awareness to the connected devices. Imagine a home-theater setup that consists of a Blu-ray player, an A/V receiver, and an HDTVall CEC-enabled and connected via HDMI. With devices supporting CEC, you can use the TV's remote to control the disc player without requiring line of sight. Commands are relayed from the TV to the player via the HDMI CEC connection. Increasingly robust CEC implementations may eventually eliminate the need for universal remote controls as connected devices inform each other when they are activated (automatically turning on related devices) and make any necessary input selections or A/V adjustments. Of course, every manufacturer names its CEC implementation differently, but a basic level of compatibility currently exists and will continue to improve.Robert Heron
