Every hero needs a best buddy and Miles 'Tails' Prower fills that role, as Sonic's closest chum and trusty sidekick. He has his shortcomings - he's petrified of lightning, for one. But his incredible skills as a mechanic - and his double tail, which enables him to fly using a chopper-like motion - make him an invaluable member of team Sonic.
Tails first becomes playable in Sonic 2 for Mega Drive (known as Genesis in the USA) and it's here that his relationship with Sonic begins to develop. He seems to be very shy initially, but over time he opens up and becomes Sonic's firm friend and ally. In each game of the Sonic series starring Tails, there is a different version of how the two met... just to keep fans guessing!
Tails' mechanical prowess is first revealed when he gets into the cockpit of Sonic's red biplane, the Tornado, and flies it like an ace. It soon emerges that he's more than just a superb stunt pilot... and he soon starts to show off prodigious technical abilities equal to those of Dr. Eggman. (Though, fortunately, Tails uses his skills for good, rather than evil.)
Tails' proper name is Miles Prower, which, in case you haven't noticed, is a cheeky pun on 'miles per hour'. However, he is always a good few paces behind Sonic.
