�Plugin for Volkov Commander published

Heiko Jagusch has written a plugin, that adds a new user menu to the Volkov Commander 4.99 or higher:

• Store/Backup files from NTFS Partitions under DOS as ACE, ARJ or ZIP archive including a batch file to restore the long file names under Win 98/NT/2000/XP
• Create advanced lists of files (with complete path, with drive letter or with additional text strings to create file lists and batch files easy)
• Archive menu's for ACE, ARJ and ZIP files

�Official polish VC homepage down

The VC homepage decease continues: Last September, Finn Ekberg Christiansen closed his (inofficial) VC homepage, now I found out, that Michal Ploskonka took the official polish VC homepage off the web - without mentioning any reasons.

�Rumours about existing Version 5 of Volkov Commander

In the community someone posted about existing VC 5. I asked the programmer for an official statement, because I never heared of this new release. Here is, what Vsevolod answered:

"Hi Daniel!

[...] VC 5.0 is a fake. The last released version is 4.99.08 alpha. [...] All official info about VC is present at your site. You will be first person who get all new info, as ususal. [...] I really didn't release new version for very long time. So, development of VC is hold in fact. But I don't exclude posibility of new releases. I have no roadmap and could not promise something."

I know, that a lot of you would like to get a new version ready for download, but I'm sorry to say, that it perhaps may take some more months, until an update of the Commander is published. I asked V. Volkov, whether it would take to much of his time to make some minor modifications and release version newer that 4.99.08 alpha just to show us, that the programming project is still alive. Even if it would be only one new feature or some kind of bug fix, it would perhaps satisfy the thousands of registered users around the world. Mr. Volkov tries to do so, because he has some new features, which were added after release of 4.99.08 alpha.

�inofficial VC homepage closed

Finn Ekberg Christiansen has closed his unofficial english VC homepage, "because nothing seems to happen with the Volkov Commander." Nevertheless Vsevolod told me in several mails, that development of VC is not stopped, but will continue with lower priority. So we have to wait and see, what happens...

It seems, as if development of VC5 is stagnating. So I decided to create a platform, where you can discuss problems, tell others, how to solve them and so on.

I hope, that this board gets an intense way to communicate with the thousands of VC users all around the world.

�Layout modified: No more frames

In the meantime most modern browsers can read and understand CSS commands. So I decided to change the layout a little bit. No more frames are used, the navigation menu is realised by server side includes and most of the formatting instructions were done by cascading style sheet commands.

�Changes in mailinglist mechanism

From now on, the newsletter mailinglist is modified directly on the server by a little perl routine, so subscribers (and, of course: unsubscribers) can update the database by simply entering their e-mail address and clicking a button. That's all, folks! A confirmation e-mail is automatically generated and sent to the added/deleted mail address. This new mechanism makes it much easier for me to handle those hundreds of mail addresses. No longer I have to manually update my mailprogram's addressbook ;-)

�Utility for Volkov Commander: LGFV

A very useful command line utility has been added. It was written by George Lyapko and it can be integrated with VC 4.99.x to view various archives (more than 90 archive formats are supported).

A lot of people use VC 4.01. That's why Vsevolod decided to make some small changes and bug fixes in this version. The most important reason is Y2K problem.

�Website has been slightly modified

Because of its growing popularity, I thought about more precise web document coding. So I dediced to have a look at the HTML statements as well as on the cascading style sheet definitions.

All documents found on the VC Homepage have been successfully proved by several validation tools, found at the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) website.

�The homepage has changed its... home :-)

From now on, the VC Homepage resides on the domain egner-online.de, the old urls have been configured in a way, that the visitors are forwarded to this new address.

�WebSite redesigned

Inspired by the typical DOS look of the commander, I have modified the navigation� menu and some of the colors used on the website.

Also the news (this document) and a separate newsletter section have been added.
