Want to know more about what actually, y’know, happens in this December’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story? If so, feast your eyes on the film’s latest full-length trailer, a juicy, two-and-a-half minute clip stuffed with new footage and tantalizing plot details. It’s focused mostly on Felicity Jones’s Jyn Erso, the new movie’s scrappy heroine—someone who seems, like all great Star Wars protagonists, to be saddled with her fair share of daddy issues. In Jyn’s case, we can blame the Empire: when she was a girl, it seems, the evil federation captured her father, Galen (Mads Mikkelsen). In the movie’s present day, Jyn learns that her long-lost dad is now “critical to the development of a super-weaponâ€â€”i.e., the Death Star.
So once again, we’ve got a father and child separated by space, time, and, perhaps, the moral spectrum as well—much like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker and, more recently, Han Solo and Kylo Ren. (And, I suppose, Obi-Wan and Anakin Skywalker, if surrogate parents count as well.) Will Jyn and Galen Erso’s paths eventually intersect when the two confront each other on a bridge atop a vast chasm, leading to a conversation that only one survives? Perhaps we’ll see on December 16, when Rogue One blasts into theaters.
