State of Generation and Treatment of Industrial Waste in FY 2001

A nationwide survey on the state of generation and treatment of industrial waste in FY 2001 (April 1, 2001 - March 31, 2002) was conducted and the results have been summarized as follows:

1.��� State of generation and treatment (figures in parenthesis are those of FY2001)
(1) Total amount of industrial waste:���Down approximately 6 million tons (approximately 1.4%) compared to the previous fiscal year.
  • Total volume���approximately 400 million tons (406 million tons)

    (2) Amount by industries:���Top-six industries account for 80% of the total, the same as in FY2000.
    (i) Electricity, gas, heat & water supply 93.14 million tons, 23.3% (91.5 million tons, 22.5%)
    (ii) Agriculture 90.43 million tons, 22.6% (90.8 million tons, 22.4%)
    (iii) Construction 76.15 million tons, 19.0% (79.01 million tons, 19.5%)
    (iv) Pulp, paper & processed paper manufacturing 27.14 million tons, 6.8% (27.06 million tons, 6.7%)
    (v) Steel industry 26.45 million tons, 6.6% (26.6 million tons, 6.6%)
    (vi) Chemical industry 16.89 million tons, 4.2% (16.86 million tons, 4.2%)

    (3) Amount by types of waste:���Top-three types account for 80% of the total discharge, the same as in FY2000.
    (i) Sludge 186.9 million tons, 46.7% (189.18 million tons, 46.6%)
    (ii) Excrement of animals 90.09 million tons, 22.5% (90.49 million tons, 22.3%)
    (iii) Tiles and pebbles 57.10 million tons, 14.3% (58.83 million tons, 14.5%)

    (4) Treatment of industrial waste:���Rates of recycle, reduction, and final disposal, the same as in FY 2000.
  • Recycle 183 million tons, 45.8% (184 million tons, 45.4%)
  • Reduction 175 million tons, 43.8% (177 million tons, 43.6%)
  • Final disposal 42 million tons, 10.4% (45 million tons, 11.1%)

    2.��� State of final disposal sites (as of April 1, 2002)
  • Critical status is unchanged.
  • Total capacity 197.41 million cubic meters(up 3.32 million cubic meters from 2001)
    Remaining lifetime 4.3 years
