Zentyal (Ubuntu server 22.04): boot problem with new kernel

Hi,

I have a difficult problem, at least for me, to solve. I am using ubuntu server 22.04.5 LTS (actually zentyal 8.x) updated in the past from 18.04 and 20.04. I have been unable to update the kernel since last November, specifically the system is stuck at 6.5.0-41 since both 6.5.0-45 and 6.8.x will not boot.

According to the ubuntu kernel lifecycle, ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS should run smoothly with both the 6.5 and 6.8 HWE kernels.

I already cleaned my system following this link.
dpkg --list | grep -v $(uname -r) | grep -E 'linux-image-[0-9]|linux-headers-[0-9]' | awk '{print $2" "$3}' | sort -k2,2 | head -n -2 | awk '{print $1}' | xargs sudo apt-get -y purge

The free space is not a problem

df -h

The error during the boot is the following:

volume group "vgservername" not found
cannot process volume group vgservername
gave up waiting for suspend/resume device
volume group "vgservername" not found
cannot process volume group vgservername
gave up waiting for root file system device. Commons problems:
- boot args (cat /proc/cmdline)
 - check rootdelay= (did the system wait long enough)
- missing modules (cat /proc/modules; ls /dev/)
ALERT! /dev/mapper/vgservername-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

cat /proc/cmdline
BOOT_IMAGE=/boot/vmlinuz-6.8.0-60-generic root=/dev/mapper/vgservername-root ro quiet splash net.ifnames=0 biosdevname=0 vt.handoff=7

I searched a lot on the web and I tried this and this solution without luck.

Maybe it is an ubuntu bug, but I am not sure if it is related.

Do you have any hint?

Only official flavors of Ubuntu are supported here. “Based on” Ubuntu is not close enough, sorry.

Your post at the start says you’re not using Ubuntu, but a Ubuntu based system.

As you chose Zentyal, why not use their support options, or a Linux/Unix support site.

I’ll also suggest you re-read Ubuntu kernel lifecycle and enablement stack | Ubuntu and note there is no reference to the 6.5 kernel on that page.

Ubuntu 22.04 LTS using the GA kernel will be using 5.15, and if using HWE you’ll be using the 6.8 kernel.

A CLI enquiry here shows

 linux-generic           | 5.15.0.141.136         | jammy-security    | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x
 linux-generic-hwe-22.04 | 6.8.0-60.63~22.04.1    | jammy-security    | amd64, arm64, armhf, ppc64el, s390x

though newer proposed options for each also show, as well as other options.

The default kernel stack for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS Server was the GA kernel (ie. 5.15).
